Eryximachus is short and fast.  Bernstein called it “an extremely short fugato scherzo, born of a blend of mystery and humor.”  Remember how in the Plato, Eryximachus spoke instead of Aristophanes who had the hiccups?  It might be my imagination, but I like to think there are some hiccups implanted here and there, starting at the very beginning. (Listen to the first three notes!)

There is also another mini-fugue (on the recording above, the solo violin starts at :22, first violins come in at :27, violas come in at :38)
