Activities

  • In groups, students can create “acts” for a play based on Prinz’s life story. Students should be encouraged to research their assigned portion of his life to ensure more depth and detail.  Once completed, allow students to perform the play.
  • Create a book or display of events from Prinz’s life using tableaus produced by students.  Take pictures of the tableau and have students write captions that describe the event.  To provide more depth, students can also be asked to write what they believe Prinz was thinking/feeling at the time of the event.
  • Using Maus as an example, students can create a graphic novel of Prinz’s life.  Students should research Prinz’s life to include a complete picture of the life of Joachim Prinz.
  • Research the life of Joachim Prinz.  Write a research paper.  Challenge students to use proper form and cite their work.
  • Have students create a character that serves as a friend, comrade, or peer of Joachim Prinz.  This character can follow the belief system of Prinz or be one of those who opposed the good for which he worked.  Students will write a diary in this character’s voice.  The diary will contain a specified number of entries, explaining events that had an impact on the character. Did the character disagree with Prinz’ predictions about the Nazi party? Did the character participate with Prinz in the March on Washington?   Did Prinz provide advice or assistance to the character?  This activity will ensure students understand the true impact of Joachim Prinz’s life.
  • Joachim Prinz participated in multiple causes during his life.  His life stands as a beacon for young people to follow as they mature and discover causes for which they are passionate.  Prinz worked for liberation of Jews from Germany.  He fought the discrimination and unjust methods of the Nazi Party.  Following his immigration to America, Prinz did not forget his call for duty to fight for just causes.  Prinz saw the injustices endured by African Americans in the United States.  He saw this as a betrayal of the America promise of “liberty and justice for all.” Prinz began to stand up for the wrongs he saw and joined the movement for civil rights.  In today’s world there are a multitude of causes for which students should be aware.  Allow students to research causes and have each student (or place students in groups) choose one for which he/she feels strongly.  These individuals or groups can create presentations to inform others about the causes they have chosen.  Campaigns can then be designed to encourage support and participation in their cause.  These campaigns should include posters, pamphlets designed to inform, letters to government representatives to encourage legislation for support, letters to encourage support and donations from the private sector including both business and individual.
