{"id":54,"date":"2017-12-28T02:56:59","date_gmt":"2017-12-28T02:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sharonroffman.com\/bernsteinserenade\/?page_id=54"},"modified":"2018-01-06T22:46:18","modified_gmt":"2018-01-06T22:46:18","slug":"does-analysis-matter","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/sharonroffman.com\/bernsteinserenade\/bernsteins-language\/does-analysis-matter","title":{"rendered":"Does analysis matter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After speaking to an audience recently about some of the compositional techniques in the <em>Serenade<\/em>, an audience member asked me a two-part question &#8212;\u00a0 &#8220;Was Bernstein aware of what he was doing?\u00a0 And how does this make me hear the piece differently?&#8221;\u00a0 More subtly, the subtext of her question was, &#8220;does this really matter?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To answer the first question, my instinct is that Bernstein was aware of what he was doing much of the time, but not necessarily all of the time.\u00a0 He liked to talk about the power of the unconscious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trust the unconscious implicitly, finding it a sure source of wisdom and the dictator of the condign in artistic matters.\u201d\u00a0 (Funny It Doesn&#8217;t Sound Jewish, pg. 184)<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of other composers&#8217; awareness, for instance Wagner&#8217;s use of a diminished seventh chord, he wrote,\u00a0\u201cIs that prevalence the result of calculation on Wagner\u2019s part? All my instincts tell me, No. It must have been an unconscious action.\u201d (The Unanswered Question, pg. 235)<\/p>\n<p>Or whether\u00a0Stravinsky was aware he borrowed from Verdi\u2019s Aida for his opera\/oratorio Oedipus Rex\u2026 \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter. What does matter is that somewhere deep in his inner musical consciousness the basic metaphor contained in Aida registered, stuck and connected with the corresponding deep metaphor in <em>Oedipus Rex. <\/em>Again, it\u2019s the amazing power of the unconscious at work.\u201d\u00a0 (The Unanswered Question pg. 417)<\/p>\n<p>Now to answer the question of whether it matters to study a piece of music or not?\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to share my own feelings on this subject.\u00a0 I live in Paris; when I moved there I didn&#8217;t speak a word of French.\u00a0 Being social and a francophile, when I was invited to parties I enjoyed listening and partaking in the general ambiance,\u00a0but I couldn&#8217;t participate in the conversation.\u00a0 Slogging through French grammar lessons, little by little my comprehension improved.\u00a0 A turning point came when a friend told a funny story about her cat and I laughed!\u00a0 I never once thought, &#8220;wow, what an interesting use of the subjunctive case,&#8221; I simply laughed!\u00a0 \u00a0But of course, the fact that I had studied the subjunctive case allowed me to understand, and to have an emotional response to her words.<\/p>\n<p>Music is a language, like any other.\u00a0 The point of familiarizing oneself with its grammar, is not to be aware of the grammar, but to allow it to open you up to have an emotional response to the music, which is the whole point of communication and art.<\/p>\n<p>So explore this site, learn about Bernstein&#8217;s language, and then forget it!
